Sometimes when we walk through certain parts of our home we notice strange smells even though the room appears to be clean. At other times when we spend a short amount of time in the same room we begin to feel sick and have problems breathing or with a runny nose. These may be signs that you have a problem with mold.
Many of us will be scared when we think that mold has infiltrated a part of our home and will call a professional service to inspect the home. This is a very expensive process and something that should not be done on a whim. Why not save yourself hundreds of dollars and learn how to spot the signs of house mold yourself.
Find The Smell
If mold has been in your home for a long time then you are going to notice a crazy smell coming from a certain area. Try to follow the smell to the right room and to certain areas in the room. As you do look around to see what could be causing it and where it might be. For example; your laundry room could have mold because of the wet clothes that are laying around.
How To Spot It
In order to find the mold you first have to know what it looks like. In most cases it will appear granular, leathery, or cottony. It may be white, gray, brown, green, yellow, or black. When on clothes and upholstery you may notice certain stains or discoloration on the surface of these.
Water Damage
Water is the main feeding and breeding ground for mold. Look around for anything that may be leaking or condensation problems. If you notice any watermarks on the walls, ceilings, carpet, or other materials than you might have found where it is growing. In some homes you will have to look underneath and behind these surfaces. When this is the case things will begin to get messy as you look behind walls and under carpets.
Health Problems
It is not uncommon for people to have allergic reactions to many or all types of mold growing inside of the home. The most common symptoms that you will experience include a runny nose, nasal congestion, cough, wheezing, sore throat, skin rash, irritated eyes, and upper respiratory infections.
